Excellent points! I absolutely agree. The Canonical Debate Lab is working on a slightly different solution from the Socratic Web approach, but at least one of our methods takes exactly what you say into account. Rather than force majority or "expert" opinion on users, it allows people to navigate the debates following multiple perspectives, including popular opinion, but also objective scores, their own belief structure, or even the beliefs of someone else (e.g. I can see how someone who disagrees with me on one issue voted on others — all anonymously, of course). The idea is to get away from the dynamic of "winning" an argument and focus on just understanding it, and understanding others.
